A friend dragged me into the walking division of a 5K roadrace for the benefit of the local YMCA. I did no preparation of any kind. I wore my old trail shoes, too heavy for pavement.
We located the winner of the last several years, so I followed him for the first half of the race. I had no idea I could keep up with him. His shoulders looked kind of tight.
I did not know the course, with all of its loops. So when the leader said we were almost done, I thought, maybe I had better push now. So I passed him. But there was another mile to go!
Now I had nobody to copy for technique and I listened more to my body. I came in a minute ahead of my opponent, who in turn bested his previous record by a minute.
My time was 36:57 minutes for the 5K, which works out to faster than 5 mph.
An amusing time was had by all. The Tai Chi must have helped...
